M. Tyrrell Burrus, MD, is a board certified orthopedic surgeon offering complex sports medicine and shoulder surgery, fracture care, and general orthopedics at the South Austin, Southwest Austin and Bastrop, Texas, offices of the Orthopedic Associates of Central Texas.
Dr. Burrus also serves as an Associate Medical Director for Rainier Healthcare where he helps oversee patient care (Nursing, Physical and Occupational therapy) in the home setting.
Dr. Burrus excels in arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgery of the knee, shoulder, ankle, and elbow, with a special interest in complex knee and shoulder reconstructions including shoulder replacements.
He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. A native of southeastern Texas, Dr. Burrus earned his medical degree at University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, where the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society granted him membership.
For his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, Dr. Burrus scored in the 100th percentile nationally for his in-training exam and served as Administrative Chief Resident. He completed a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, under nationally and internationally recognized surgeons and received additional training in hip arthroscopy. For Part I Examination of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (a certifying examination), Dr. Burrus scored in the 95th percentile nationwide.
His passion for sports medicine also springs from working with several high school and NCAA Division I athletic programs, including the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. Additional highlights included assisting the Under 18 USA Hockey National Team Development Program and providing sideline coverage for the International Champions Cup.
Dr. Burrus is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Texas Medical Association, and Travis County Medical Society. Outside of treating every patient like family, Dr. Burrus enjoys quality time with his wife and two children and plays a variety of sports.
