Dr. Girling, a native Texan, was raised in the Austin area prior to moving to San Antonio for medical school. He grew up hunting, fishing and participating in various sports, such as karate, MMA, and rowing; to name a few.
When he was just a boy, around seven or eight years old, Bob was attending board meetings for a successful home health family business and fully expected to follow his grandmother, an entrepreneur and family matriarch, into the business world. But at age 15, Dr. Girling ruptured his spleen during a snowboarding accident and was airlifted from the top of a mountain to a hospital where his life was saved by an amazing surgeon. From then on his career path was forever changed.
As an undergraduate student at The University of Texas at Austin, when a family friend, who is a plastic surgeon, invited him to observe and later assist in the operating rooms he owned. It was then Dr. Girling knew he was hooked. “The time I spent with him proved I was meant to be in the OR,” says Dr. Girling.
Dr. Girling completed his medical degree, orthopedic surgical residency and adult joint and reconstruction fellowship at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. There he was honored with the Charles A. Rockwood, Jr. Student Award for Excellence in Orthopedics.
Dr. Girling is currently one of the partners at Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio and has many locations around the San Antonio area. He specializes in adult reconstructive surgery, notably full and partial knee and hip replacement and revision surgery, Dr. Girling is a strong proponent of shared decision-making. While in residency he co-developed an interactive tool to help patients fully understand their treatment options as well as pre-operative and post-operative care requirements. The app is now used by hundreds of surgeons throughout the United States.
When Dr. Girling isn’t taking orthopedic trauma call at several of the major hospitals around San Antonio, operating or seeing patients in clinic, he enjoys spending time with his family. Dr. Girling met his wife, Stephanie, in their freshman English class at S.F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas and they have been together ever since. The high school sweethearts have two children, Brittany and Robert. Since both are highly involved in youth athletics, Bob and Stephanie spend much of their free time at sporting events. However, the family does enjoy hunting, fishing and traveling together when they have a chance. Bob and Stephanie are also involved in many volunteer organizations throughout San Antonio, always striving to make their community a better place to be.
